How to Make Modified Lids

Modified Lids – Patches and Ports

The jar lids will need to be modified to allow gas exchange and sterile injection. Therefore, we need to drill two holes through the jar lid, about 3/4″ from the outer edge, using your drill and a 19/64″ bit. You may lay the lids on top of a plank of wood, to avoid damaging the surface underneath.

Affix the self-adhesive patch over one hole and insert the self-healing port into the other. The modified lid is now complete and ready for use.

Modify the jar lids using the same method above, however rather than buy the 19/64″ bit you can use whatever you have laying around that is close to 1/4″, or a stepper bit with a 1/4″ mark.

Squirt a generous dab of red RTV silicone in one hole, so that it is protruding out from both sides of the jar lid. Spray your gloved index finger and both sides of the newly added silicone with isopropyl alcohol. You may now perform a series of swift taps on both sides of the silicone to form it into a patty shape which totally encloses the hole from both sides.

Prepare all your lids in this same manner, and allow them to cure for at least 12 hours. You can rest the lids on top of their rings while they cure. The RTV will stick to itself so don’t let the ports touch each other. You can now apply two layers of tape to the other hole, perpendicular to one another. The modified lid is now complete and ready for use.
